Portrait of UK artist Eelus

About

I didn’t set out to be an artist. I just knew early on that the world made more sense when I was drawing rather than speaking.

Books and sketchpads became portals to safer worlds when real life felt too loud, too unpredictable, too hard to navigate. Art gave me a way to communicate without forcing words into place.

In the early 2000s I found my way into London’s street art scene, and that changed everything. Suddenly I was surrounded by people who built their own worlds the same way I did. I painted and exhibited alongside artists who were shaping the culture at the time, and for the first time I had a voice that felt natural. That scene gave me direction, confidence, and a kind of creative adrenaline that carried me through difficult years stuck in office jobs I couldn’t function in. AuDHD and corporate structures are a brutal combination. Making art in the streets kept me afloat.

I’m self-taught, and that’s shaped the way I work. No one showed me the “right” way, so I learned by doing — obsessively, for decades. My practice has taken me around the world with successful solo exhibitions, collaborations, and projects that still surprise me when I look back.

My work sits in constant contrast: light and dark, hope and unease, clarity and noise. Some days the imagery leans brighter. Other days it comes from darker places. Most of the time, it’s the tension between the two that forms the narrative. That contrast isn’t a theme — it’s my internal landscape translated into a visual language.

A quarter of a century since cutting and painting my first stencil, I’m still here, still developing my craft, still using imagery to articulate what can’t be expressed any other way.
